"The Hobbit", if you aren't already familiar, is a book by J.J.R. Tolkien set in a time "Between the Dawn of Faerie and the Dominion of Men." The Hobbit follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug.
It was first published on September 21, 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Caregie Medal. The book remains popular and is recognized as a classic. Due to the book's critical and financial success, a sequel was requested by Tolkien's publishers. As work on the The Lord of the Rings progressed, Tolkien made retrospective accommodations for it in one chapter of The Hobbit. The work has never been out of print. Its ongoing legacy encompasses many adaptations for stage, screen, radio, and gaming, both board and video games, and now...a movie!!!

Peter Jackson, who filmed the 'Lord of the Rings trilogy' and 'King Kong', will NOT be directing The Hobbit. He will instead be an executive producer on the film but the 'director torch' of this film has been passed onto Guillermo Del Toro who directed 'Hell Boy' and 'Pan's Labyrinth.'
Guillermo Del Toro will move to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his production teams. He will helm the two films back to back – telling the story of “The Hobbit,” and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
Peter Jackson who is an admirer of Toros work said this about Toro directing this film, “Guillermo is a filmmaker of outstanding ability; he is a genuine storyteller who brings a tremendous amount of passion, energy and imagination to his work. A true original, Guillermo is a cinematic magician who has never lost his child-like sense of wonder."
